For the first time, the new generation turned out to be mentally weaker than their parents — neuroscientist.

An American neuroscientist has stated that representatives of generation “Z” demonstrate lower intelligence scores than previous generations, for the first time in the history of observations.

According to Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, those born between 1997 and the early 2010s are inferior to their parents in concentration, memory, reading, math, and problem solving.

The scientist attributes this to the widespread use of digital devices in schools, where short videos and constant distraction interfere with in-depth thinking and assimilation of complex information. “If you look at the data, you can see that as countries begin to widely adopt digital technologies in schools, academic performance decreases significantly,” Horvath said. He added that the United States is not the only country affected by digital cognitive decline, noting that his study covered 80 countries and showed a six-decade trend towards deteriorating learning outcomes as more technology is introduced into the learning process.

Horvath said that the decline in cognitive abilities began around 2010 and became systemic. At the same time, many young people mistakenly assess themselves as smarter than they really are, which the researcher attributes to the peculiarities of information consumption on the Internet.

The situation requires a review of school policy: digital tools should not be completely eliminated, but their use should be limited, and learning should focus on skills that require long–term attention and consistent work.
