Quite a long time ago, I wanted to try to repeat Einstein’s intellectual feat, namely, to create a “new” Special Theory of Relativity (SRT). That is, I assumed that I DID NOT KNOW about the existence of SRT and I myself had to explain the negative result of Michelson’s experiment, showing that there was no difference for the speed of light propagation in the direction of approaching the Earth in orbit (30 km/sec) and retrograde.
To do this, I reread the description of this experience eleven times in different books in the hope of “feeling” the clue that led Einstein to the SRT.
I DIDN’T FEEL the hint!!!
But when I reread this description for the eleventh time, suddenly something began to “scratch” in my head and, as a result, a hypothesis appeared – an addition to the postulates of the SRT: the postulate of Mobility and the postulate of Auto-Correction (More “poetically” called by me “AUTO-MOBILE”)
(See the lengthy article “On Additions to the Special Theory of Relativity”).
The postulate of Mobility consisted in the assumption that there is an ABSOLUTE FRAME of REFERENCE and it is a propagating electromagnetic wave. And all mechanical movements of bodies should be considered precisely in relation to it. (And not in relation to some absolutely motionless space).
Of course, their velocities in relation to this frame of reference should be calculated NOT according to the principle of adding Galileo’s velocities, but according to SRT!!!
The postulate of Auto-correction suggested the assumption that with any movement of the source and receiver of an electromagnetic wave, such that it is emitted not along the motion vector, but perpendicular to it or at any angle other than zero, the front of this wave rotates. In particular, this applies to the course of the rays during aberration and to the course of the transverse motion of the Earth beam in the Michelson experiment.
This note is a small clarification and elaboration of both of these postulates.
Instead of the term “Auto-correction”, you can use another name, more specific and precise: the Transverse Vector Effect.
His definition remains valid, but we will consider these phenomena in more detail.
Let’s look at aberration again. So, due to the fact that the Earth moves in orbit around the Sun, we must tilt the telescope slightly in the direction of movement so that the light of a certain star falls into the optical center of the eyepiece. This can be noticed, as James Bradley noted in 1727-1729, only by changing the direction of the Earth’s velocity vector in relation to a star, it seems, Gamma Draconis, the brightest star in this constellation. (Near the Big Dipper). The angular displacement was 20.5 arc seconds.
Now let’s conduct a simple mental experiment: “Stop” the Earth, preventing it from falling into the Sun, and make this star move at the same speed – 30 km / sec and also in a year in two opposite directions. In order to detect the difference in the direction of rotation of the telescope.
(Due to aberration, we cannot detect the movement of the Earth along with the Sun in the galaxy, because THERE is NO DIFFERENCE IN THE DIRECTIONS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM’S VELOCITY!!! Our stellar region makes a complete revolution around the center of the galaxy in 75 million years, it will be difficult for us to wait for the turn!)
Since we assume that both the star “Altanin” and the Earth are Inertial Reference Frames (which, strictly speaking, is incorrect, but ACCEPTABLE for this phenomenon!), then all phenomena should occur in exactly the same way (according to SRT). This means that aberration should be observed in THIS CASE. That is, WE have to turn our telescope slightly to the side again in order to shift the image to the center of the eyepiece! Although the Earth DOES NOT MOVE in relation to the Sun and does not describe any orbits!
But this SEEMS to contradict another postulate of the SRT, about the CONSTANCY of the SPEED of LIGHT and its independence from the motion of the source or receiver. In order to eliminate this contradiction, we ARE FORCED to accept the postulate of the TRANSVERSE VECTOR EFFECT,
Yes, the speed of light remains constant in magnitude, BUT the VECTOR of ITS PROPAGATION changes its direction so that aberration would be observed in this case.
WHAT causes such a turn?
Of course, we can apply the conclusions of the SRT and say that the effects, albeit weak, of shortening lengths, slowing down time, and even increasing the inert mass of a body moving relative to our frame of reference interfere here. These effects, together or separately, somehow “turn in the right direction” the propagation vector of the light wave front…
IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE, but IT IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!
Why?
Because the second experience already exists in reality – the Michelson experience! There is also a beam TRANSVERSE to the movement of the Earth, which propagates by reflecting from mirrors that are STATIONARY to each other! So the effects of SRT are NOT APPLICABLE here!
BUT!!!
If we now “remember” the First Postulate of Avto-Mobile, about the existence of an Absolute Frame of Reference in the form of a light (electromagnetic) wave, then it turns out that the principle of Auto-correction (Transverse Vector Effect) CAN be applied, because BOTH MIRRORS (or otherwise – the emitter and receiver) THEY MOVE mechanically in relation to the light!
Yes, they are MOTIONLESS in relation to each other, but they are MOBILE in relation to the Absolute Frame of Reference – the light wave!
The fact is that in Michelson’s article about this experience, he does not even try to explain the strangeness of the ROTATION of the transverse beam by the movement of the Earth, but only BRIEFLY mentions that “but the other path is also affected by the motion; FOR, IN ORDER TO MEET THE DIVIDING SURFACE ON RETURN, THE ACTUAL PATH WILL BE …” !
By other “simplified” words: The beam MUST come to the right place!!!
It turns out that inanimate nature “at our will” MUST behave “as WE need it» for the experiment to be successful!
It is clear that this is NOT how natural phenomena are EXPLAINED in real science!
Our assumption is the assumption of the Postulate of Auto-Correction or the Transverse Vector Effect, along with the Postulate of Mobility, removes the need for verbal evasions or unintelligible mumbling about INCOMPREHENSIBLE effects that DO NOT FIT into generally accepted theories or explanations!
Thus, Michelson’s famous experiments not only prove the fact that the speed of light is CONSTANT in MAGNITUDE relative to any MECHANICALLY moving body, regardless of its speed, but these same experiments also prove my postulate about auto-correcting the direction of an electromagnetic wave, that is, if the wave is emitted perpendicular to the velocity vector of moving relative to the same propagating electromagnetic field or is received by a receiver moving relative to it, then the WAVE FRONT rotates, corresponding to the ratio of the mechanical velocity of the source or receiver to the speed of light.
This turn is due precisely to both complementary postulates to the SRT: the Postulate of Mobility and the Postulate of Auto-correction, otherwise there is no way to explain the strictly physically “behavior” of the beam transverse to the Earth’s orbital velocity vector.
Thus, Michelson’s experiment PROVES THE CORRECTNESS of both of my additional postulates.
This in no way contradicts the fact that the speed of light is constant, because we are talking only about the ROTATION of the vector of the speed of light!
