“For the home, for the family”

During our school years, there was an ironic expression in our class, used by one of the smartest boys in our class, Vladik Apinis (Apinis is Latvian for “hop”, which, however, did not apply to him in any way!):

“Virtue on wheels.”

He was referring to a hypocritical saint, supposedly observing all moral norms.

I remembered it purely by chance, when I built the above-mentioned dressing table myself in half an hour.

I have already discussed the topic of making furniture from ordinary “real estate” movable in one article about the journey into the century-old future of “Mobile furniture”. So I decided to put everything in my humble power on the wheels. I have in my bedroom and, at the same time, in my “study” (look how grandly I called it!) — a dresser with mirrored doors, somewhat damaged by two moves.

But I usually hang clothes on them to go outside (in order to ventilate, as well as pajamas, which I also hang outside in the morning). And because of the laziness to move them away and the small spatial freedom, it is inconvenient to see yourself “before going out.” So I decided to make a mobile dressing table out of the existing “free” mirror and an old cheap suitcase trolley. I made it extremely simple, even to the point of primitiveness.

But the topic turned out to be “bigger”:

Why do we believe, as we did thousands of years ago, that furniture should be stationary? Or maybe not thousands, but a couple of million years ago, when cannibals in caves chose some kind of flat boulder as a bed, so as not to sleep on the cold and windy, and sometimes wet floor of the cave. And a campfire was burning nearby, heating and enveloping this “sleeping” boulder with appetizing smells. And that’s why cannibal also dreamed of warm and “edible” dreams…

That’s where the sleeping on the stove came from!

Based on the most basic and sound judgments, any furniture SHOULD BE MOBILE. This immediately improves the hygienic status in the house, allowing you to regularly sweep and clean the floors THROUGHOUT the house, rather than leaving dust and everything else to accumulate for years under heavy cabinets, dressers, sideboards, bookshelves (of which I have twelve) and any other sedentary or generally immovable furniture attributes.

It is high time for furniture companies to start producing ALL movable furniture, with motors and servomotors controlled remotely, and later computerized. I’m not talking about folding and shape-shifting beds and so on.

They are already available.

But about any EASILY MOVABLE FURNITURE! It also enlivens and diversifies everyday life.

The wheels, of course, must be equipped with controlled brakes, because a self-rolling table or chair will not provide comfort, but just the opposite!
